Last night on my way home, I stopped into the Soho Apple Store to hear graphic designer Keetra Dean Dixon speak about her work. I was a fan just from seeing the work on her site, but after hearing her speak, its incredible how much thought goes into her projects and how conceptual they are. She is also very inspirational, and talked about how she got herself to create more work that she enjoyed creating vs. less exciting commercial work. I liked her idea of making one-a-days, where she gave herself 24 hours to complete a project even though she claims many took more that one day. Anyway, I've written about her before, but check out her site again fromkeetra.com.

I love the work of Wendy Bevan. She shoots polaroid instead of digital. The colors are fantastic, and the some of images (for Vogue Italia) remind me of what Cuba might have resembled in my grandparent's era.

Clic Gallery on Broome Street is currently showing blown up journal entries of surfer Tony Caramanico. Each entry is dedicated to a location he surfed somewhere in the world, and reveals the weather, the mood, what he cooked, and who he was dating. I picked up the catalog for Frankie since one day he'd like to surf the world too and I'd like to come watch :)

When shopping is totally out of the question for anytime in the near future, a visit to the thrift leaves you more than satisfied when 20 dollars can get you a belt, a pair of python clutches, a fun skirt, some scarves, and a colorful beach cover-up.
Then my lucky eye, which never fails me, found this! Luckily Frankie saw my face and got it for me hehehe....Its perfect!

I was surprised to find a Marni store in a corner of Miami's Design District. Then I found out my post about Tomas Maier was a bit out-of-date, because he has moved his shop to the same 39th street where Marni is, and again, the store is divine! En Avance moved their boutique to the strip after 14 years on Lincoln Road, and Y-3 has also set up shop a few storefronts down. Its nice to see some fashion in the area that is primarily an interior decorator's hang out.

I haven't visited this little gem in Miami in a few years, but it always remains in my mind as the perfect beach shop. Tomas Maier's Miami Beach boutique is off the beaten path in an old Miami Beach home located in an area predominantly inhibited by tow trucks and photo studios. Here you can find Bottegas, Bikinis, and pretty much a finely curated stock of anything you might need for beachcombing with style. You can also find great books, cds, candles, and usually they have photo exhibit showing.

Kiss this year good bye, and how delicious would it be to wake up on the first morning of the year in this scrumptious velvet robe...Resolutions anyone? Although my status quo is far beyond anything to complain about, I know I have tasks to undertake this year, so for 2009, its going to be more about working and "refurbishing" those small areas I've let slide. Whether updating the portfolio or repainting my apartment, this year the To-Do List shall be conquered, so next year's resolutions can be a little more indulgent. Enjoy xo.

Looking forward to this book under the tree at my grandparents' house this Christmas, along with a few others I've already mentioned :) Domino magazine took the best of its material and put together this nice little decorating book. I used to spend some cash on fashion and design magazines, but lately I've noticed Domino is the one mag I get every month...The interiors they shoot are great, and lend for great inspiration. There's always the right amount of eclectic in each home they choose, I love it. I should probably subscribe lol...

C. Madeleine's is one of Miami's hidden spots for vintage. The 10,000 square foot store is divided by decade and will leave you browsing for hours. Aside from great designer vintage, they have a bridal section, a section for international vintage (think old school kimonos and ethnic costume).
In the recent W magazine featuring Bruce Weber's photos shot in Miami, Kate Moss and clan headed to the shop for a "fashion field trip"

Sunday Sofia invited me to check out PINTA: The Modern & Contemporary Latin American Art Fair up here in New York, some interesting works, some not so interesting works. A Nelson Leimer piece above. Skateboards came up again by an artist named Sofia Maldo, who lives in Miami if I'm not mistaken. She was doing a live painting, which was being auctioned off and the money is going to sending kids skateboards in Havana. Her illustrations, which I can't find anywhere online, are kind of interesting, like a Fafi girls living the favela life...

I picked up this book, 100% DM: A Book About Direct Marketing, not knowing what to expect. The Japanese like to wrap some books in plastic wrap, so you never know what you're going to get. As the cover states, its pretty much "the ultimate collection of fashionable lookbooks, pop-out invites, and printed promo teasers". If you save invites and paper like its your day job, then get this book.

Swavaroski has sponsored a 70th year anniversary of the Wizard of Oz (in 2009) and had some of the most notable designers design their own interpretation of the Ruby Slipper. They were on display at Saks during Fashion Week, and will now make their way to Art Basel. Definitely going to take a break for "the fine art" to check this out! Jimmy Choo, Moschino, and Besty Johnson's sketches above. They will be auctioned off next year to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

If you're ever looking for a little design inspiration in Miami, I recommend the Wolfsonian in South Beach. They have an incredible archive of artifacts and graphic design ephemera from the late 1880s to the end of the 1940s (Art Deco, I love you so) While you are there check out Dynamo, the bookstore/copy shop seen above.

Thanks to a head's up from Jelsen, I made it out to the NY Book Fair today. Took my bike over to Phillips de Pury one more time to find a huge gathering of book lovers and book covers. As I was leaving I came across Michel Gondry signing his little paperback "You'll like this film because you're in it: The Be Kind Rewind Protocol"...anyway I had him sign a copy and since the line was no longer than me, he was drawing quick portraits. He gave mine and said in a lovely french accent, "I hope you don't mind, I drew you naked."

This Tuesday was the reception for Saturdays@Phillips at Phillips De Pury. The auction starts tomorrow, its kind of like pre-school for future art collectors, a lot of toys, street artists, vintage furniture, and photography. If I had some extra cash, there were definitely some objects of interest.
ps sorry if my music interrupts your currently playing track lol

Fellow freelancing from homers, Jelsen, Guillo, and I made it out to MAD today, the newly rebranded Museum of Art and Design in Columbus Circle. Pentagram's identity solution seen above. They had some interesting things, but I would have liked to have seen some graphic design somewhere in the collection, not just contempory art and lots of "crafts". Either way fun times.

I was in invited this past weekend by a friend to stay at his house in Southhampton, and now I am all inspired to get domestic. Him and his boyfriend made delicious food, had a beautiful garden, and don't get me started on the cottage. I didn't want to leave the pool in the yard. At night after dinner I came across Slim Aaron's Poolside book, and am kind of obsessed with the imagery. Like the forward mentions, the pictures were taken in a time when people didn't have a care in the world, and tanning, drinking, and smoking came with no health warnings, nor did spontaneous romantic rendevous. Even if these people did have a care in the world, Aarons did a good job at hiding that from his lense. The women were so glamorous, fully made up to lounge at the pool, with their hair all done up and their giant sunglasses and scarves on their heads. I love it!!

A look from Mayle's F/W 2008 collection inspired by the writings of Jeanne Moreau. Love the Japanese* prints and tropical colors for a winter collection.
*Speaking of which, I am excited to tell that I will be going to Asia with my parents end of August for 3 weeks! It will be my first time and would love to hear recommendations of things to see and do in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore.

My sister has had this watch for a while, and while I don't think this picture does it justice and I'm not a huge Michael Kors fan, it looks spectacular on. It looks great with all black or white...the oversized all gold one is really nice too. You can get them on the Kors website.

I just spent a few days in Bimini, a small island in the Bahamas, with my family and got some much needed sun. To keep me entertained I picked up this book by our friend Poppy King, the Lipstick Queen. Lessons of a Lipstick Queen is the story of how she began her lipstick company at the age of 18, and how you can turn your idea into a business. Her story is very inspirational, and pretty much she breaks down everything you need to know (even the technical stuff) about what to do with your ideas. I called my best friend in Malaysia after reading the first chapter and told her to go order it!

A wool bikini from the 1940s at the Met. I will be heading to the Bahamas tomorrow for a family vacation in Bimini and how fun would a high-waisted bikini have been?

I pass by this shoe in the Catherine Malandrino window when I take the long way home from work, and suddenly I picture a lot of dancing in a tropical place (somewhere in cuba perhaps?) with good friends, amazing music and lovely dresses. Successful design that really does tell a story.

I'm a sucker for all things embroidery, especially from far away lands. Recently we've been overexposed to lots of beautiful Ikat patterns, making them a little less exciting. Suzani (above) refers to this style of Persian embroidery, which is slowly making its presence known on accent chairs and pillows. My mom has a giant one hanging in the entrance of our house, and its a nice way to cover a bare wall, without having to invest paintings, posters, and framing....ebay has some good ones. Greetings from Miami, I came into town for a wedding tomorrow and then hosting a lingerie shower at a pole dancing studio for a friend on Sunday. Anyway, in the spirit of Miami, I introduce Ambra Medda, I don't her know personally, but her sense of style is just the right amount of ecclectic, and recently Paris Vogue did a Miami issue, with a style profile on her. Not only is she gorgeous, but she is also runs Art Loves Design during Art Basel, held in the Design District. Basically the focus of her event is a celebration of contemporary design that just barely could fall under fine art, but more in the industrial design world. And she's not even 30 yet.

I am a bit picky when it comes to basics. For example Hanes white v-necks seem to flatter everyone but me. Same with tanks, I just have a hard time with them. Yesterday I found this one, and I think I might get some more. 5.99 on the Old Navy website. Trust me, its very flattering. Also picked up a cute linen skirt in the sale rack. oldnavy.com

I would be excited to get my hands on this. Maybe carlo can bring me a copy since he is currrently in Germany. Its the first issue of a bi-annual publication called Apartamento, dedicated to the living and working areas of people, that stay pretty real and aren't styled by a decorator (supposedly).

Get one now, the very structured bustier. This one is from Bodkin, a new line based out of Brooklyn, we can probably find some interesting ones on ebay. While you are at it pick up Dita Von Teese's book, The Art of the Burlesque. She is insane, I love it. I read it two years ago (and got it signed by her at Harrods!) When she wrote the book she was still married to Marilyn Manson, so it may sound outdated, but she really knows her stuff. It breaks down the make up techniques of each decade, and the style of dress of each era. I don't dress like her at all, but it was cool to see the line at Harrod's full of girls that looked like they just walked out of a Dick Tracy movie. Not to mention she gives a great historical breakdown of Burlesque dancing.

I will be attending this tonight, even though I'm not really sure what it is, I guess just a networking thing. I have a lot of freelance stuff going on that I'm pretty excited about, and wouldn't mind meeting a few more people. I hope one day I can just work out of my apartment! I also wish I had made some new business cards...

I have been eyeing this book at McNally's for some time now, and I just might get it. Dressing the Home:The Private Spaces of Top Fashion Designers, its pretty much self-explanatory. DVF's ecclectic living room, Christian Louboutin's extravagant interiors, and Vanessa Bruno's Marais apartment, that is absolutely to die for. The images below are of the latter, but they are from an old British Elle Decor. I would never leave my house.

An image from the current exhibit at the Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Miami for Cary Kwok. Actually if you are Paris, check out the Aya Takano show. I saw it in Miami, and its amazing. I'm going to try to join my gallerina friend for their Paris opening in October where Pharell will be exhibiting his "chairs", should be a fun time!

I have only been to Milan once, so I really don't know what is where mapwise, but last time I was there I went to 10 Corso Como which is hands down my favorite store in the world. I just remember it wasn't in the center of town, which made an even more unexpected find. The own Carla Sozzani has a gallery (Galeria Carla Sozzani), a cafe, a bookshop, and the enormous boutique all in this semi-fort hidden under foliage. The compound also has a small hotel three rooms called 3 Rooms. Anyway, the store has everything, but well-edited everything, amazing jewelry, bags, shoes, books, furniture, and for me it is way cooler than Colette, yet doesn't get much hype. It helps that her sister, Franca, is the editor-and-chief of Italian Vogue. This is a MUST if you happen to be in Milan. I also love the hand-drawn logo, the whole store is black and white circles, dots, and designs. Apparently Carla's boyfriend Kris Ruhs did the logo.

Carlo's early birthday present, so fun to ride, I think I want one too. We're just trying to figure out where to keep it, because its a bit bright to keep on the street, so unfortunately it would probably get stolen.

Carlo and I had a nice Sunday in Ft. Greene with Jenny and Soren, first stop at the Brooklyn flea, which was packed. Jenny picked up some dresses and a nice bag, I picked up a portrait for the apartment. Then we went for corn and too many frozen margaritas at Habana Outpost...followed by a visit to Jen at Bonita. Back in my neighborhood we hung out on the rooftop with the neighbors and had late dinner at Lovely Day. Great company!

OAK is making markdowns....They just put out their second issue of their publication "oakazine". The art direction is cute, they hired some swedes to guest edit/design it but its not very original. Its like the urban outfitters copy of ACNE paper.

I pass by this shop all the time walking on Lafayette, and its so dark and intense that I find myself often intimidated. The funny thing is, I think this is one of the coolest stores in New York. Bess. It used to be a Keith Karing store but is now the home of Doug and Bess Abraham's amazing jewelry designs. He apparently is in charge of the Ralph Lauren jewelry collection, but you would never know bc this store is anything but waspy. Aside from the jewelry, they have vintage t-shirts, random posters and sculptures, and my favorite, their studded collection of jeans and shoes. They play good music too.
